I recently did a talk at the RHS Cardiff Flower Show on behalf of RSPB Cymru to promote their current campaign of 'Giving Nature a Home', you might have seen the recent TV ads where the little girl builds a wildlife home and waits.....'If you build it they will come!'. The message about getting out into your own patch wherever that may be and giving our wildlife a fighting chance is one that's dear to my heart, and I will do it at any opportunity, not just at big events, but anywhere! The RHS were kind enough to ask me to do the talking and give everyone the buzz at their lovely Show, but I'm available to talk, demonstrate and do workshops at any event, large or small, so why not get in touch if you need some extra imagination and inspiration at yours!!! I will also bring my 'Pop Up' stall for information and fun interactive family activities. It could be magic!
There are undisputed benefits which come from getting out and about and experiencing the natural world. It can heal the soul, calm the mind and strengthen the body. It creates a sense of self and makes us examine just where we fit in to the whole scheme of things. Nature can be the backdrop to our childhood, creating life long experiences which will be carried with us and may form the people we are and the people we would like to become. Outside we can visit and create our own enchanting places and reconnect with the natural world to experience the phenomenal force of nature. Wild creatures remind us of our place in the world and our everyday problems can drop into perspective, becoming smaller, when surrounded by a bigger picture.
Wildlife has the capacity to surprise and astound us with its' beauty, tenacity, adaptability and diversity................
'Pop Up Garden' what's that I hear you say, well you can create one anywhere, anytime using a range of flowering and foliage plants in containers of all shapes, sizes and colours. Container gardening is great, it's a portable and flexible way of staging plant displays all around the garden, in beds and borders, to create the illusion of a more established scheme, or to fill up those awkward corners where it's impossible to plant anything. Clustering groups of 3 or 5 containers together gives great impact and it means that you can regularly 'ring the changes' in the way your garden area looks (balconies included). If you're on the move and renting, it's a great way of creating an instant garden wherever you go, you can beautify a balcony or create court yard chic, right through to a country garden hideaway. So pop out, get some pots, and 'pop up' a garden!!!!
Some people may think that it's just not possible to give wildlife a home because they live in rented accommodation, well, I can say from personal experience, please don't be disheartened, everything is possible! It just takes a little ingenuity and planning for portability if circumstances mean that you are regularly 'on the move', I know because I've done it! Keep any habitats you create small and simple in construction so that at a moments notice it's all easily transported to another place where the wildlife will benefit equally as well. I always feel that whatever the situation and wherever you are it's worth making the effort in supporting nature, but not only that it will keep giving joy to you too!! Remember, 'If you build it they will come!'
We recently worked with a local school, providing ideas and loads of fun as part of their Outdoor Curriculum and Forest School activities. The KS2 year 6 children went barking bonkers in the woods as they discovered the joys of simple orienteering and tree identification with a difference. The kids had an absolute 'blast' when they had to negotiate (led by an adult) a treetastic route, trying to identify each tree by its shape, size and texture, but here comes the difference, they were blindfolded! Without being able to see the children had to let their other senses take over, a bit 'touchy feely', and were asked to try and remember the characteristics of each tree as well as their route around them. They had a barrow load of fun making their discoveries, and some who were reluctant to take part initially became totally engaged and engrossed in the activity, especially when they had to re-trace their steps afterwards without their blindfolds! Using their sensory knowledge which had previously been gathered along the way, they successfully tracked around the woods correctly identifying as they went. At the end of their time outdoors, and having completed other different planned activities also, they took a vote and decided that the 'Tree Trail' had been the most fun, exiting and interactive! What a triumph for us at Schools Out!! As part of Greenfingers Designs, Schools Out! very much serves to re-enforce many outdoor initiatives for children and young people, not least the work of Project Wild Thing, which aims to get everyone re-connecting with the big wide world outside. Perhaps when you're out and about with some youngsters either at home or in school, you too could have a go at your own 'Tree Trail' and dig into a bucket load of fun and laughs for yourselves!!! By the way, it's great for adults too!! So, Go Green, Go Wild and Go Barking Bonkers!!
